Meursault Les Genevrières Premier Cru

Meursault · Côte de Beaune · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Les Genevrières is the most powerful and concentrated of Meursault's three principal Premier Crus, lying on the mid-slope above the village on a south-southeast exposure. The 16.28-hectare vineyard is divided into Dessus (upper) and Dessous (lower), with the upper section on thin, stony, well-drained limestone soils producing wine of the greatest finesse and mineral grip. The name derives from the French for juniper bushes, which once grew on the slope before the vines were planted. Les Genevrières occupies a quality tier between the approachable richness of Les Charmes and the austere precision of Les Perrières, combining the hazelnut and cream character of Meursault with a firmer structure and more pronounced mineral backbone than Charmes. Coche-Dury's holding is small but produces one of their most sought-after whites at a fraction of the Perrières production. Comtes Lafon and Bouzereau provide the broadest availability.

Meursault Les Genevrières Premier Cru
01

Les Genevrières Dessus, the upper portion of the vineyard, is widely regarded as producing the finest wine within the climat — comparable in quality to Les Perrières but with a slightly richer, more textural character.

02

Coche-Dury's Les Genevrières averages over $1,200 per bottle at auction despite being a Premier Cru, driven by the same cult following that elevates their Perrières to near-impossible allocation.

03

The vineyard's south-southeast orientation and mid-slope position allow it to accumulate heat without losing the acidity that distinguishes top Meursault Premier Cru from the richer, lower-lying village vineyards.

04

Les Genevrières was identified in the 19th-century Lavalle classification as one of the highest quality sites in Meursault — a classification that has proven enduringly accurate.

In the Glass

Meursault Les Genevrières offers the most powerful and structured expression among the village's primary Premier Crus: concentrated ripe pear, hazelnut, and warming spice on the nose, alongside a firmer, more textural palate than Les Charmes. The mineral backbone is more evident than in Charmes but less austere than Perrières; the texture is generous and mouth-coating, with oak integration contributing subtle vanilla and toast. Finest bottles from Coche-Dury and Lafon need 10–15 years to integrate fully, evolving toward white truffle, beeswax, and dried apricot.
