Meursault

Côte de Beaune · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Meursault is the most important village in Burgundy for white wine by volume and arguably by reputation — a paradox, given it has no Grand Crus. The village sits just north of Puligny-Montrachet, and its broader, more bowl-like exposures produce a Chardonnay of distinctive opulence: richer, rounder, and more immediately pleasurable than the taut architecture of Puligny, yet capable of profound complexity in the finest Premier Cru sites. Les Perrières, at the southern end of the village adjacent to the Puligny border, is the exception — a stony, vertical Premier Cru whose finest bottles compete with Grand Crus in quality and auction price. Jean-François Coche-Dury's Meursault Perrières is perhaps the single most sought-after white wine in Burgundy: it is made in tiny quantities and commands prices that far exceed most Grands Crus. Comtes Lafon and Guy Roulot are the other two cornerstone producers. Meursault accounts for more white Burgundy lots at auction than any other individual village appellation.

Meursault
01

Despite having no Grand Crus, Meursault's Les Perrières Premier Cru regularly sells for more per bottle than most Côte de Nuits Grands Crus, driven almost entirely by the cult status of Coche-Dury's micro-production.

02

Meursault is the only major Côte de Beaune village whose appellation contrôlée AC laws allow Aligoté and Pinot Blanc plantings in addition to Chardonnay, though in practice virtually all production is Chardonnay.

03

The village takes its name from the Latin 'muris saltus' — leap of the mouse — a reference to the abrupt change in soil character between the red soils at the top of the slope and the whiter limestone below.

04

Patrick Javillier, Arnaud Ente, and Pierre Morey have elevated once-overlooked village-level Meursault to cult status in certain bottlings, proving the appellation's depth extends well below the Premier Cru tier.

In the Glass

Meursault Chardonnay leads with hazelnut, toasted almond, and beurre noisette — a richer, creamier register than Puligny. Village-level wines show butter, ripe pear, and honey; the Premier Crus add complexity with white truffle, flint, and candied citrus peel. Les Perrières is the outlier: more mineral and vertically structured, it resembles a taut Puligny or even Chablis Grand Cru in its most precise vintages. Age brings beeswax, lanolin, and a compelling savoury depth.
