Meursault Les Perrières Premier Cru

Meursault · Côte de Beaune · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Meursault Les Perrières is the greatest Premier Cru in Meursault and one of the most extraordinary white wine vineyards in Burgundy. The 13.66-hectare climat sits at the southern end of Meursault adjacent to the Puligny-Montrachet border, at an elevation of 250–280 metres. The soil here is the thinnest in Meursault — just a few centimetres of stony, limestone-rich topsoil over broken Bathonian bedrock, barely deep enough to sustain vines. This extreme drainage and the proximity to the Puligny limestone bedrock produce a Meursault of entirely different character from the village's typical hazelnut-and-cream opulence: Les Perrières is taut, mineral, and vertically driven, with an acidity and tension that allow it to age for 20+ years. The vineyard is divided into two parts: Dessus (upper) and Dessous (lower), with the lower half generally considered superior. Coche-Dury's micro-production of 300–400 cases annually is the most allocated and highest-priced Meursault in the world. Comtes Lafon and Roulot produce the other benchmark expressions.

Meursault Les Perrières Premier Cru
01

Les Perrières is Meursault's only Premier Cru with a realistic claim to Grand Cru status — its thin, stony soils and mineral precision more closely resemble a Puligny Grand Cru than the rich clays of typical Meursault.

02

Coche-Dury's allocation of Les Perrières is the most sought-after entry in fine wine allocation globally; secondary market prices regularly exceed $2,500 per bottle and can approach $8,000 for older vintages.

03

The name 'Perrières' derives from the Old French for quarry or stone — an apt description of the extremely rocky, shallow soils that make this site unique within Meursault.

04

Domaine Maison Leroy also holds a small parcel and produces Les Perrières that commands Grand Cru-level prices, adding a second highly allocated expression alongside Coche-Dury.

In the Glass

Meursault Les Perrières is the antithesis of typical Meursault: instead of hazelnut and cream, it leads with chalk, oyster shell, and citrus zest — a mineral precision more reminiscent of Puligny than the richer village style. The palate is taut, saline, and vertically structured with razor-sharp acidity; the finish extends for minutes, not seconds, with persistent flint and white pepper. With age — 10 to 20 years for top producers — the wine develops white truffle, beeswax, and toasted almond within its enduring mineral framework, rivalling Côte de Nuits Grand Crus in longevity and complexity.
