Volnay Clos des Ducs Premier Cru
Volnay · Côte de Beaune · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices
The Clos des Ducs is a 2.15-hectare walled Premier Cru monopole at the top of the Volnay slope, owned entirely by Domaine Marquis d'Angerville. The clos — named for the Dukes of Burgundy who historically owned the site — sits at the highest altitude of any Volnay Premier Cru, where the soils are thin and stony over active limestone. This elevated position produces a wine of remarkable aromatic intensity and structural finesse: more taut and mineral than the mid-slope Champans, with higher natural acidity and exceptional longevity. The d'Angerville family has owned the domaine since the early 20th century; the current Marquis, Guillaume d'Angerville, maintains the monopole's reputation for producing the most complex and age-worthy wine in the village. The Clos des Ducs is the most expensive Volnay at auction and the standard-bearer for the village's potential for greatness.
In the Glass
Volnay Clos des Ducs is the most complete expression of what the village can achieve: intensely perfumed red cherry, violet, and rose petal on the nose; a palate combining silky, fine-grained tannins with a mineral backbone and vibrant acidity; and a finish of extraordinary length and precision. More structured than most Volnay, it rewards 10–20 years of ageing, evolving toward truffle, dried rose, cedar, and Burgundian spice while retaining the floral lift that makes Volnay uniquely appealing among Côte de Beaune reds.
