Volnay Clos des Ducs Premier Cru

Volnay · Côte de Beaune · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

The Clos des Ducs is a 2.15-hectare walled Premier Cru monopole at the top of the Volnay slope, owned entirely by Domaine Marquis d'Angerville. The clos — named for the Dukes of Burgundy who historically owned the site — sits at the highest altitude of any Volnay Premier Cru, where the soils are thin and stony over active limestone. This elevated position produces a wine of remarkable aromatic intensity and structural finesse: more taut and mineral than the mid-slope Champans, with higher natural acidity and exceptional longevity. The d'Angerville family has owned the domaine since the early 20th century; the current Marquis, Guillaume d'Angerville, maintains the monopole's reputation for producing the most complex and age-worthy wine in the village. The Clos des Ducs is the most expensive Volnay at auction and the standard-bearer for the village's potential for greatness.

Volnay Clos des Ducs Premier Cru
01

The Clos des Ducs is a true walled monopole of Domaine Marquis d'Angerville — every bottle bearing this label comes from the same 2.15 hectares and the same family estate that has owned the site for over a century.

02

At the highest elevation of any Volnay Premier Cru, the Clos des Ducs produces wines that are more structured, mineral, and long-lived than lower-slope sites like Champans — requiring 10–15 years to show their best.

03

The name references the Dukes of Burgundy, whose ownership of the site in medieval times is commemorated in the clos name and which historically positioned this parcel as the most prestigious in the village.

04

Domaine Marquis d'Angerville was among the first Burgundy domaines to bottle and estate-label their own wines in the 1930s, rather than selling to négociants — a pioneering move that helped define the quality-focused domaine bottling model.

Volnay Clos des Ducs is the most complete expression of what the village can achieve: intensely perfumed red cherry, violet, and rose petal on the nose; a palate combining silky, fine-grained tannins with a mineral backbone and vibrant acidity; and a finish of extraordinary length and precision. More structured than most Volnay, it rewards 10–20 years of ageing, evolving toward truffle, dried rose, cedar, and Burgundian spice while retaining the floral lift that makes Volnay uniquely appealing among Côte de Beaune reds.
