Volnay Champans Premier Cru

Volnay · Côte de Beaune · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Champans is the largest and most widely known Premier Cru in Volnay, covering approximately 9 hectares on the mid-slope between the higher, stonier Clos des Ducs above and the village-level vineyards below. The soils here are a mix of limestone-enriched clay and iron-bearing marl — deeper and richer than the thin soils at the clos des Ducs altitude — producing a Volnay of greater generosity and textural roundness. Champans is the classic expression of Volnay: red cherry, violet, and silky texture that makes the village's reputation for finesse fully apparent. Domaine Marquis d'Angerville is the dominant producer and their Champans is typically the most sought-after expression; Domaine de Montille provides the second major reference point. The two together account for the vast majority of Champans lots at auction.

Volnay Champans Premier Cru
01

Champans is one of the few Volnay Premier Crus with multiple high-profile owners producing benchmark expressions — d'Angerville and de Montille both have significant parcels, giving auction buyers two contrasting interpretations.

02

The mid-slope soils of Champans are deeper and more clay-rich than the highest Volnay sites, contributing to the wine's greater textural roundness and more immediately approachable character versus Clos des Ducs.

03

Champans appears in Burgundy vineyard records from the 14th century, making it one of the longest-documented Premier Cru sites in Volnay and evidence of the historical recognition of the site's quality.

04

d'Angerville's Champans is typically priced lower than their Clos des Ducs monopole, representing excellent value within the estate's range and one of the best introductions to the d'Angerville style.

Volnay Champans is the village at its most classically expressive: vivid red cherry, violet, and subtle rose petal on the nose; a medium-bodied, silky palate with fine tannins, vibrant acidity, and a clean, mineral-inflected finish. More immediately generous than Clos des Ducs but still structured enough to reward 8–12 years of cellaring. De Montille's expression leans toward more grip and earthiness; d'Angerville's toward more polish and aromatic precision. Both reward patience and both illustrate why Volnay is prized for finesse above all.
