Volnay Taillepieds Premier Cru
Volnay · Côte de Beaune · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices
Taillepieds is one of the highest-altitude Premier Cru vineyards in Volnay, sitting on the upper slope adjacent to the Meursault appellation boundary. The name derives from the Old French 'taille-pieds' — to cut the feet — possibly a reference to the difficult, stony terrain that made cultivation laborious. The soils here are thin, stony, and limestone-dominated, with excellent drainage and significant daytime temperature variation that preserves natural acidity. The resulting wine is among the most structured and mineral Volnay Premier Crus — less immediately generous than Champans, with more backbone and longevity. Domaine de Montille is the key producer and their Taillepieds is considered a benchmark for the site's characteristic grip and freshness. Rossignol-Trapet produces a more perfumed, accessible expression. Both need 8–12 years to show their best.
In the Glass
Volnay Taillepieds is the most structured and mineral expression in the village's Premier Cru range: red cherry and violet alongside a stony, almost chalky mineral note; a medium-bodied palate with firm, fine tannins and prominent acidity that initially gives the wine a taut, somewhat austere character. Less immediately generous than Champans, it rewards patience — 10–15 years reveals dried rose, truffle, cedar, and an earthy complexity that justifies the wait. De Montille's version in particular demands time to show its depth.
