Volnay

Côte de Beaune · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Volnay produces what many consider the most elegant red Burgundy: pale ruby, perfumed, and silky-textured Pinot Noir from a compact hillside between Pommard to the north and Meursault to the south. The village has no Grand Crus, yet its best Premier Crus — Champans, Caillerets, Taillepieds, and the d'Angerville monopole Clos des Ducs — are among the most consistently sought-after reds in the Côte de Beaune at auction. The geology here is distinctive: a thin layer of active limestone over iron-bearing clay, draining well and warming quickly in the morning sun. Marquis d'Angerville is the village's prestige producer, their 2.15-hectare Clos des Ducs monopole setting the price benchmark. Domaine de Montille and Domaine Michel Lafarge are the other two pillars of the village. Volnay is celebrated for its aromatic lift — violet, cherry, and red rose — and for a structural restraint that makes it more approachable young than Pommard while still rewarding a decade of cellaring.

Volnay
01

Volnay has no Grand Crus despite containing some of the finest red wine terroir in Burgundy — a classification anomaly that makes its best Premier Crus exceptional value relative to Côte de Nuits Grand Cru pricing.

02

The Clos des Ducs is a 2.15-hectare walled monopole of Marquis d'Angerville, planted at high altitude on the upper slope; it is the most expensive Volnay at auction and has been in d'Angerville family ownership for over a century.

03

Pousse d'Or's Clos de la Bousse d'Or — a 2.14ha monopole — is another celebrated Volnay Premier Cru whose silky, perfumed style epitomises the village's reputation for elegance over power.

04

Volnay vines are cultivated higher on the slope than Pommard, producing wines with lighter colour, higher acidity, and finer tannins — a direct expression of the elevation difference despite the villages sharing a boundary.

In the Glass

Volnay Pinot Noir is defined by aromatic finesse above everything else: fresh cherry, violet, and red rose on the nose; a silky, medium-bodied palate with supple tannins and vibrant acidity. The Premier Crus add complexity — Champans brings dark cherry and velvet texture; Taillepieds offers more structure and mineral grip; Clos des Ducs combines floral lift with earthy depth and exceptional persistence. With age, Volnay develops truffle, forest floor, and dried rose petal in a way that few other Côte de Beaune reds can match.
