About Chateau Pape Clement
Pape Clément in Pessac is described as Bordeaux's oldest wine estate. Its vineyard was planted in 1300 and given to Bertrand de Goth when he became archbishop of Bordeaux. On his election as Pope Clement V in 1306 he passed it to his successor as archbishop, and the archbishops kept it until the Revolution. In the 19th century, especially under Jean-Baptiste Clerc, it ranked close to Haut-Brion. Paul Montagne revived it from 1939, with advice from Émile Peynaud. His son Léo Montagne now co-owns it with Bernard Magrez. The red was classified in the 1959 Graves classification after being left out in 1953.
