Pio Cesare is one of Piedmont's most venerable négociant-grower houses, founded in 1881 in Alba by Cesare Pio and operated continuously by the Pio family for six generations. The house produces Barolo, Barbaresco, and a full range of Langhe varietals, occupying a position as a reliable, classically styled producer that bridges traditional and modern approaches — using a combination of large Slavonian oak botti and smaller French barriques depending on the wine. Ornato, the estate's flagship single-vineyard Barolo from the Serralunga d'Alba commune, is the most auction-active wine and commands the highest prices: typically $120–200 per bottle in good vintages, with Parker regularly awarding 93–96 points. The standard Barolo — a multi-commune blend showing the house's consistency rather than site specificity — is widely available and averages lower at auction. Barbaresco and the Nebbiolo d'Alba round out a portfolio that offers entry-level access to the Pio Cesare style.
