Chassagne-Montrachet

Côte de Beaune · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Chassagne-Montrachet lies immediately south of Puligny-Montrachet and shares its most celebrated vineyard: the eastern half of Le Montrachet Grand Cru (roughly 4.0 of the 8.01 total hectares). The village also contains the 1.57-hectare Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, which lies entirely within Chassagne, and holds a portion of Bâtard-Montrachet. Chassagne is distinctive among the great white Burgundy villages for the quality of its red wines — the iron-rich, clay-limestone soils in the lower reaches of the slope produce structured, cherry-and-violet Pinot Noir from Premier Crus such as Clos St-Jean, Morgeot Rouge, and La Maltroie that are underrated relative to Volnay. The dominant white Premier Crus are Les Ruchottes, Les Caillerets, Les Chenevottes, and Morgeot, with Ramonet standing apart as the village's foremost producer. Chassagne whites tend toward a slightly richer, more toasted-almond style compared to the more tautly mineral Puligny.

Chassagne-Montrachet
01

Chassagne-Montrachet holds the sole ownership of Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet (1.57ha), the smallest Grand Cru in the Côte de Beaune, made almost exclusively by a small handful of village producers.

02

Domaine Ramonet's holdings across Le Montrachet, Bâtard, and Ruchottes make it the definitive producer of Chassagne, and their Montrachet is regularly the most expensive Chassagne wine at auction.

03

Unlike its northern neighbour Puligny, Chassagne produces significant quantities of red wine — roughly 40% of production — from Premier Crus whose quality rivals Volnay at their best.

04

The village appellation Chassagne-Montrachet contrôlée covers both white and red, and Colin, Fontaine-Gagnard, and Bachelet-Monnot provide some of the most consistently reliable village-level values in the Côte de Beaune.

In the Glass

Chassagne-Montrachet whites occupy the middle ground between Meursault's generous richness and Puligny's steely precision: toasted hazelnuts, ripe pear, honeysuckle, and subtle beeswax at village level, building to more complex almond, white peach, and flint in the Premier Crus. Les Ruchottes and Les Caillerets offer the most mineral expression. The reds — Pinot Noir from the iron-enriched lower slopes — deliver darker cherry, violet, and an earthy, slightly rustic grip that responds well to a decade of age.
