Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Chassagne-Montrachet · Côte de Beaune · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet is the smallest and most obscure of the six white Grand Crus in the Côte de Beaune, covering just 1.57 hectares entirely within Chassagne-Montrachet. The vineyard lies beside Bâtard-Montrachet on the lower mid-slope, between the boundary of Puligny-Montrachet and the village of Chassagne. 'Criots' derives from an old Burgundian word for small stones or dry ground — an accurate description of the very stony, shallow topsoil over Bathonian limestone. The tiny size of the vineyard and the small number of producers — primarily Blain-Gagnard, Fontaine-Gagnard, and Joseph Belland — mean it rarely appears at auction in large quantities. The wine tends toward a style between the richness of Bâtard and the precision of the Chassagne Les Ruchottes Premier Cru: generous and textural but with a distinct mineral backbone. It is one of the least well-known Grand Crus in Burgundy despite its exceptional terroir.

Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
01

At just 1.57 hectares, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet is the smallest Grand Cru entirely within the Côte de Beaune and one of the smallest in all of Burgundy — production from the entire appellation amounts to perhaps 7,000 bottles in a generous vintage.

02

The entire Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru lies within Chassagne-Montrachet borders, making it the only Montrachet-family Grand Cru that belongs exclusively to a single village.

03

Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet is paradoxically one of Burgundy's best-value Grand Crus: its obscurity relative to its neighbours means prices remain substantially below Bâtard despite the adjacency of the terroir.

04

The Blain-Gagnard family (and related Fontaine-Gagnard domaine) have long been the dominant producers in Criots, their combined holdings covering a substantial portion of the vineyard's 1.57 hectares.

Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet occupies a stylistic position similar to Bâtard but with slightly lighter body and more obvious stone fruit aromatics: white peach, almond blossom, and crushed limestone on the nose; a creamy, medium-full palate with good mineral freshness and more freshness than the broader Bâtard. The stony, shallow soils prevent the wine from achieving the full opulence of Bâtard while adding a mineral precision that lifts the finish. It rewards 8–12 years of ageing, developing hazelnut, beeswax, and subtle truffle.
