Le Montrachet Grand Cru (Chassagne)

Chassagne-Montrachet · Côte de Beaune · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

The Chassagne-Montrachet half of Le Montrachet Grand Cru encompasses approximately 4.0 of the vineyard's total 8.01 hectares, lying on the southern side of the communal boundary between Puligny and Chassagne. The Chassagne portion is divided among a slightly different set of owners than the Puligny side, with Domaine Ramonet holding the most famous parcel and producing the most sought-after Chassagne expression. The soils on the Chassagne side have marginally more clay than the Puligny side, though the difference is subtle given the proximity — typically a few dozen metres across the boundary. At this elevation and orientation, the differences between Puligny and Chassagne Montrachet are philosophical as much as geological; great producers on both sides of the boundary produce wines that transcend the distinction. Ramonet's Montrachet is one of the most discussed wines in Burgundy, often cited alongside DRC and Leflaive as representing the pinnacle of the vineyard.

Le Montrachet Grand Cru (Chassagne)
01

Ramonet's parcel in Le Montrachet on the Chassagne side is the village's most prized holding; the wine is made in tiny quantities and commands prices that consistently rank among the top ten most expensive white wines at auction.

02

The boundary between Puligny and Chassagne passes through the heart of Le Montrachet, meaning a single row of vines can be simultaneously in two different village appellations — yet the wine made from each must be labelled accordingly.

03

Marc Colin's parcel in the Chassagne side of Le Montrachet produces a less well-known but equally refined expression, offering a rare alternative to the Ramonet benchmark.

04

Le Montrachet has been singled out as exceptional for centuries: in the 1860s, Dr Lavalle noted it as the uncontested premier Grand Cru of the Côte de Beaune, a status it has never relinquished.

In the Glass

Le Montrachet from the Chassagne side shares the fundamental character of the whole vineyard — otherworldly tension, concentration, and mineral complexity — but the Ramonet expression in particular tends toward slightly more breadth and warmth than the Leflaive and DRC from the Puligny side, reflecting the marginally richer soils. White peach, acacia, and honeysuckle give way over 10–20 years to beeswax, white truffle, spiced citrus, and an almost magical saline intensity. The Chassagne Montrachet is a wine that must be tasted to be believed.
