Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru (Chassagne)

Chassagne-Montrachet · Côte de Beaune · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

The Chassagne-Montrachet portion of Bâtard-Montrachet covers approximately 5.86 of the vineyard's 11.86 total hectares, lying below Le Montrachet on the Chassagne side of the village boundary. The producers here differ from the Puligny side — Ramonet, Fontaine-Gagnard, and Michel Niellon are the key names — and the stylistic character is marginally richer and more opulent than Leflaive's Puligny expression. The soil on the Chassagne side of Bâtard contains slightly more clay in the lower sections, contributing to the wine's body and roundness. Ramonet's Bâtard-Montrachet is consistently one of the most sought-after from the entire Grand Cru, often cited alongside Leflaive as the two defining expressions. The Chassagne ownership structure means the wine is slightly more available than some Puligny expressions but equally demanding of patience, needing 8–15 years to integrate fully.

Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru (Chassagne)
01

Ramonet's Bâtard-Montrachet from the Chassagne side regularly commands higher auction prices than most Puligny-side expressions, driven by the domaine's reputation for low-yield, terroir-driven winemaking.

02

The Chassagne side of Bâtard-Montrachet has a marginally different ownership profile than the Puligny side, reflecting the historical land-holding patterns of the two villages' most prominent families.

03

Fontaine-Gagnard's Bâtard-Montrachet represents excellent value within the Grand Cru tier, produced from well-positioned parcels with a more accessible price point than Ramonet.

04

The total 11.86 hectares of Bâtard-Montrachet is divided among dozens of owners on both sides of the boundary, with no single producer dominant — giving auction buyers access to a range of expressions across multiple price points.

In the Glass

Bâtard-Montrachet from the Chassagne side shows the same broad, opulent richness as the Puligny half but with a marginally warmer and more generous character from the clay-enriched soils: ripe white peach, toasted almond, vanilla-tinged oak, and warm honey on the nose; a full-bodied, glycerous palate with remarkable concentration and length. Less tight than Chevalier above, less transcendent than Montrachet, but superbly rich and complex. Ramonet's expression in particular adds a precision that lifts the wine beyond pure opulence.
