Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles Premier Cru

Puligny-Montrachet · Côte de Beaune · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Les Pucelles is widely considered the finest Premier Cru in Puligny-Montrachet — a 7.0-hectare vineyard whose southern border abuts the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru. The proximity to Grand Cru terroir is not coincidental: the soils here share the same limestone-and-marl composition as the adjacent Grand Cru, with excellent drainage and mid-slope orientation. 'Les Pucelles' translates as 'the virgins' — a medieval name whose meaning today is less important than what grows on the site. Domaine Leflaive is by far the dominant owner, and their Les Pucelles is the most sought-after Premier Cru white from the village, often selling for prices that rival or exceed certain Grand Crus. The wine combines the mineral tension characteristic of Puligny with a roundness and texture that reflects its proximity to Bâtard-Montrachet.

Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles Premier Cru
01

Les Pucelles borders Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru to the south — so closely that Domaine Leflaive's parcel is essentially an extension of the Grand Cru terroir, explaining the wine's near-Grand Cru quality.

02

Domaine Leflaive's Les Pucelles consistently commands Premier Cru prices comparable to lesser Grand Crus and is the domaine's most important Premier Cru holding.

03

At 7.0 hectares, Les Pucelles is large for a prestige Puligny Premier Cru, yet production remains very limited because the vine density and low yields typical of top Burgundy estates mean actual output is modest.

04

The name 'Les Pucelles' appears in vineyard records as early as the 14th century, making it one of the longest-documented Premier Cru sites in Puligny.

Les Pucelles sits at the pinnacle of Puligny Premier Cru expression: more mineral and focused than village wine, yet with greater textural generosity than the most austere Premier Crus such as Les Perrières. Expect white peach, lemon blossom, and crushed chalk on the nose; a medium-full palate combining precision with a silky, almost round texture; and a finish of unusual length with chalk and almond. From Leflaive, the wine approaches Grand Cru in depth and demands 8–12 years of ageing.
