Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Puligny-Montrachet · Côte de Beaune · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Bâtard-Montrachet is an 11.86-hectare Grand Cru that lies immediately below Le Montrachet on the slope, straddling the boundary of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. The Puligny half accounts for approximately 6 hectares; the Chassagne half for roughly 5.86 hectares. Sitting at lower elevation than Montrachet and Chevalier, the soils here contain more clay and are deeper and richer, producing a wine of greater breadth and generosity than the aristocratic tension of Montrachet above. Bâtard-Montrachet is the richest, most opulent, and most immediately approachable of the Puligny-Montrachet Grand Crus — though it still benefits substantially from 8–15 years of age. Domaine Leflaive is the key producer from the Puligny side; Ramonet and Fontaine-Gagnard from the Chassagne side. The wider ownership base means Bâtard is the most commercially available of the four local Grand Crus.

Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
01

Bâtard-Montrachet is the only Grand Cru in Burgundy to span two village appellations in almost equal measure — Puligny (approximately 6ha) and Chassagne (approximately 5.86ha) — with different producer rosters on each side.

02

At nearly 12 hectares, Bâtard is more than twice the size of Chevalier-Montrachet and fifteen times larger than Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, making it the most widely available of the Montrachet family Grand Crus.

03

The deeper, clay-richer soils of Bâtard versus the stonier Chevalier above produce the most immediately opulent Puligny Grand Cru — approachable in 5–8 years vs the 10+ years required for Chevalier.

04

Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Ramonet together hold a substantial share of the vineyard and represent the benchmark for Puligny-side and Chassagne-side expressions respectively.

In the Glass

Bâtard-Montrachet is the most generously proportioned of the Montrachet Grand Crus: rich, broad, and opulent, with notes of ripe white peach, toasted almond, honeycomb, and vanilla-inflected oak on the nose; a voluminous, glycerous palate with notable weight and warmth. Less taut than Chevalier, less transcendent than Montrachet, but offering its own form of compelling richness that rewards 10–15 years of cellaring as the opulence integrates into a complex tapestry of hazelnut, beeswax, and savoury depth.
