Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Puligny-Montrachet · Côte de Beaune · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet is the smallest of the four Grand Crus of Puligny-Montrachet at 3.69 hectares, lying entirely within the village borders. The vineyard sits beside Bâtard-Montrachet on the lower mid-slope of the hillside, to the north and slightly above Bâtard, on soils that are slightly lighter and more limestone-rich than the deeper clays of Bâtard to the south. The name translates literally as 'welcome, bastard of Montrachet' — a whimsical medieval naming convention for a vineyard that, while excellent, was viewed as less aristocratic than the Grand Crus above. In practice, the wine occupies a stylistic position between the richness of Bâtard and the tension of Chevalier: more delicate, more floral, and more precise than Bâtard, though rarely with the electric mineral drive of Chevalier. Domaine Leflaive, Domaine Ramonet (who hold parcels crossing the Chassagne boundary), and Domaine Carillon are the key producers.

Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
01

At 3.69 hectares, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet is the smallest Grand Cru entirely within Puligny-Montrachet borders — smaller than Chevalier and much smaller than Bâtard, contributing to its relative scarcity at auction.

02

The name 'Bienvenues' was historically added to distinguish this parcel from the larger Bâtard-Montrachet; it is the only Grand Cru in Burgundy whose name includes a salutation.

03

Domaine Leflaive's holding in Bienvenues borders their Bâtard parcel; the stylistic contrast between the two from the same producer illustrates how even 50 metres of slope position dramatically alters soil depth and wine character.

04

Domaine Carillon, one of the most historically significant Puligny-Montrachet producers, produces a textbook Bienvenues that is among the best value Grand Cru whites from the village.

Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet sits stylistically between its neighbouring Grand Crus: more delicate and floral than the broad opulence of Bâtard, with more elegance and less raw power. Expect white peach, acacia blossom, and almond on the nose; a creamy, mid-weight palate with good mineral freshness and lingering citrus peel on the finish. Less tension than Chevalier, less width than Bâtard — but its own distinct personality of floral generosity and precision makes it unique among the Montrachet family.
