Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

Puligny-Montrachet · Côte de Beaune · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Chevalier-Montrachet occupies a narrow band of 7.36 hectares directly above Le Montrachet on the Puligny hillside, at an altitude of 270–300 metres — the highest of the four Puligny Grand Crus. The extra elevation means thinner, stonier topsoil over harder, more broken limestone, less clay, and slightly lower temperatures, producing a wine that trades the broad opulence of Montrachet for electric mineral tension and extraordinary precision. The vineyard is entirely within Puligny-Montrachet. Domaine Leflaive is the dominant owner, with their Chevalier the most widely traded Grand Cru expression from the village after DRC's Montrachet. Michel Niellon produces a benchmark expression from the village of Chassagne; Domaine Mugnier has a tiny holding. The wines are notoriously slow to open — even more reserved than Montrachet in youth — and require a decade of ageing to show their full mineral complexity.

Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
01

Chevalier-Montrachet is the highest-altitude Grand Cru in Puligny, producing the most tightly wound and mineral expression of any Grand Cru in the village — with greater longevity potential than Bâtard-Montrachet.

02

Domaine Leflaive controls the largest single share of Chevalier-Montrachet and produces approximately 2,000–2,500 bottles annually from their 1.8 hectares, making it among the most scarce yet widely traded Burgundy whites.

03

The name 'Chevalier' (knight) traditionally refers to the hierarchy of the Montrachet family of Grand Crus: Chevalier above, Bâtard (bastard) and Bienvenues-Bâtard below — a feudal naming convention from medieval Burgundy.

04

Mugnier's tiny 0.09-hectare holding in Chevalier-Montrachet is the domaine's only white Grand Cru and produces roughly 50 cases per year — making it perhaps the hardest-to-find Chevalier at auction.

In the Glass

Chevalier-Montrachet is the most mineral and electrically precise of the Puligny Grand Crus: lemon zest, flint, chalk, and crushed oyster shell characterise the nose; the palate is taut, vertically structured, and possessed of extraordinary length and saline energy. Unlike the broad richness of Bâtard-Montrachet, Chevalier prioritises tension and focus. With age — 10 to 20 years for top producers — it reveals almond, beeswax, and white truffle within the enduring mineral framework. It is, above all, a wine of extraordinary persistence and drive.
