Le Montrachet Grand Cru (Puligny)

Puligny-Montrachet · Côte de Beaune · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Le Montrachet is the most celebrated dry white wine vineyard in the world. The 8.01-hectare Grand Cru straddles the boundary of Puligny-Montrachet (approximately 4.01ha) and Chassagne-Montrachet (approximately 4.0ha), lying on a perfectly oriented mid-slope between the two villages at around 250 metres elevation. The Puligny half is divided among a tiny number of owners: Domaine de la Romanée-Conti holds 0.67 hectares, Domaine Leflaive 0.08 hectares, and Domaine Etienne Sauzet 0.12 hectares — each making microscopic quantities that have become the most allocated white wines in the world. The terroir combines thin topsoil over broken Bathonian limestone with a slight south-southeast exposure, generating a combination of concentration and mineral tension found nowhere else. A bottle of DRC Montrachet represents the single most expensive dry white wine sold at auction; prices exceeding $10,000 per bottle are routine.

Le Montrachet Grand Cru (Puligny)
01

DRC's 0.67-hectare parcel in Le Montrachet is farmed biodynamically and produces approximately 500 bottles per year — making it one of the most scarce Grand Cru wines in the world.

02

Le Montrachet sits at the precise mid-slope elevation where drainage, sun exposure, and limestone concentration converge; vines planted just metres above or below show measurably different character.

03

Bouchard Père & Fils owns the largest single parcel of Le Montrachet at approximately 0.89 hectares, producing a more commercially available bottling than the domaine wines.

04

The vineyard has been referenced as exceptional since at least the 16th century — Alexandre Dumas declared one must drink Montrachet on bended knee with head bowed, a sentiment still shared at auction.

In the Glass

Le Montrachet defies simple description: at its best it combines the mineral precision of the finest Chablis Grand Crus with a richness and textural complexity that no other white wine can match. Notes of white peach, honeysuckle, and acacia blossom underpin a palate of extraordinary concentration, saline tension, and beeswax. The best examples from DRC and Leflaive seem to vibrate with tension in youth and evolve over 20–30 years toward truffle, lanolin, and spiced honey. It is less about flavour than about energy and length.
