La Tâche

Vosne-Romanée · Côte de Nuits · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

La Tâche is one of only three monopole Grand Crus in Burgundy, owned entirely by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti since 1932. At 6.06 hectares, it is the largest of DRC's Grand Cru monopoles and produces approximately 2,200–2,500 cases per year — making it both more accessible and more scrutinised than Romanée-Conti itself. The climat occupies a gently curved mid-slope amphitheatre in Vosne-Romanée, with Jurassic limestone and iron-rich marl providing the minerality and structure that give La Tâche its distinctive backbone. Stylistically, La Tâche sits between the ethereal perfume of Romanée-Conti and the power of Richebourg: it combines deep red and black fruit with violet, iron, spice, and a long savoury finish of extraordinary complexity. Bottles from the legendary vintages of 1978, 1990, 1999, 2005, and 2015 command among the highest prices of any red wine at auction globally.

In the Glass

La Tâche delivers a combination of perfume and structure unlike any other Grand Cru: deep cherry, blackberry, and plum fruit intertwined with violet, iron, tar, and dried rose petal. The tannins are firmer than Romanée-Conti but never harsh, giving the wine a long evolution of 15–35 years in great vintages. At full maturity, an almost exotic combination of dried fruit, spice, sous bois, and savoury mineral notes emerges, making each bottle an event in itself.
