Grands Échezeaux

Vosne-Romanée · Côte de Nuits · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Grands Échezeaux is a 9.14-hectare Grand Cru lying immediately above Clos de Vougeot, with a tight cluster of owners that includes Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Emmanuel Rouget, Joseph Drouhin, and Domaine Lamarche. Despite its name echoing the larger Échezeaux below, Grands Échezeaux is a fundamentally different wine — more structured, concentrated, and age-worthy, with thinner soils and a more privileged mid-slope position. The appellation abuts the northern wall of Clos de Vougeot, drawing comparison to its Grand Cru neighbour but consistently producing more complex and longer-lived wines. DRC's version is considered one of the more accessible expressions in their portfolio at release but rewards 10–20 years of cellaring for its full complexity to emerge. Emmanuel Rouget's holding, inherited from his uncle Engel, produces a more forward, intensely fruited style.

Grands Échezeaux
01

Grands Échezeaux (9.14 ha) sits directly above Clos de Vougeot at a superior mid-slope position, producing more structured and complex wines than the larger Échezeaux appellation below.

02

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti's Grands Échezeaux is typically 15–25% cheaper than their Richebourg at auction — offering relative value within the DRC portfolio for collectors seeking mid-range entry.

03

The appellation has fewer than a dozen serious producers, making it easier to navigate than the sprawling Échezeaux; DRC, Rouget, and Drouhin account for the majority of auction volume.

04

In the best vintages (2010, 2015, 2019), Grands Échezeaux from DRC and Rouget achieves an intensity and mineral precision that challenges Richebourg in blind tastings.

In the Glass

Grands Échezeaux combines Vosne-Romanée's characteristic red fruit and spice with greater structural depth than Échezeaux: dark cherry, blackberry, and plum wrapped in iron, violet, and sous bois. The tannins are more substantial than the lighter Grand Crus to the south, requiring 8–15 years in great vintages to fully integrate. At peak maturity the wines develop a complex, savoury depth approaching that of Richebourg, with exceptional length on the palate.
