Échezeaux

Vosne-Romanée · Côte de Nuits · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Échezeaux is the largest Grand Cru appellation in the Vosne-Romanée cluster at 37.69 hectares — a sprawling climat administratively divided into eleven separate lieux-dits, lying just above Clos de Vougeot on the mid-slope. Its size and the diversity of its parcels produce wine of more variable quality than the smaller, more tightly defined Grand Crus of the village, making producer selection critical. The finest parcels sit in the upper-slope lieux-dits of Les Rouges du Bas, Les Poulaillères, and En Orveaux, where thinner soils produce more concentrated, structured wine. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Emmanuel Rouget (who inherited Eugene Engel's exceptional parcels), and Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg represent the quality summit. At auction, Échezeaux offers collectors their most accessible entry point into DRC's portfolio — typically 40–50% less per bottle than Grands Échezeaux.

Échezeaux
01

Échezeaux (37.69 ha) is the largest Grand Cru in the Vosne-Romanée cluster and the most diverse in character — its eleven sub-lieux-dits range from Grand Cru-quality upper parcels to less distinguished lower positions.

02

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti's Échezeaux is the most affordable entry into their portfolio, typically priced 40–50% below Grands Échezeaux at auction while sharing the same elevage approach.

03

Emmanuel Rouget inherited the exceptional parcels of Domaine Engel (his uncle Henri Engel) in 1985 and has produced benchmark Échezeaux from old vines planted in some of the finest upper positions.

04

The appellation attracts the widest range of producers of any Vosne Grand Cru — from DRC and Leroy to négociant bottlings — giving the secondary market depth and price points from $180 to $2,500+ per bottle.

In the Glass

Échezeaux at its best combines the pure red fruit and floral character of Vosne-Romanée with a more accessible, early-maturing structure than the top Grand Crus. Cherry, raspberry, violet, and spice dominate in youth; older examples develop sous bois, iron, and dried rose complexity. The finest parcels from DRC and Rouget achieve real Grand Cru depth with an additional silkiness and persistence that distinguishes them from Premier Cru territory.
