Romanée-Saint-Vivant

Vosne-Romanée · Côte de Nuits · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Romanée-Saint-Vivant is a 9.44-hectare Grand Cru lying at the northern edge of the DRC cluster in Vosne-Romanée, directly bordering Richebourg and the top of the commune. Of all the Vosne Grand Crus it is perhaps the most transparent and mineral — the soils here are thinner and more stony than Richebourg to the north or La Tâche to the south, producing wines of ethereal delicacy and extraordinary aromatics rather than sheer power. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is the largest holder (~5.3 ha), having acquired the Marey-Monge estate in 1988, and their version is the defining benchmark. The remaining hectares are shared between Domaine de l'Arlot, Domaine Leroy, Louis Latour, and Sylvain Cathiard — each producing a contrasting interpretation of the terroir. The 1993, 1999, 2005, and 2015 from DRC are considered the finest recent expressions and command premiums at auction.

Romanée-Saint-Vivant
01

Romanée-Saint-Vivant (9.44 ha) is the most delicate and aromatic of the Vosne Grand Crus; thin, stony soils produce wines of transparent perfume and mineral precision rather than weight.

02

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti holds approximately 5.3 ha (acquired from Marey-Monge in 1988) — over half the appellation — making it their second-largest Grand Cru holding after La Tâche.

03

Sylvain Cathiard's tiny parcel (0.18 ha) produces one of the most sought-after micro-cuvées in Burgundy; his allocation list spans years and secondary market prices regularly triple release.

04

The appellation takes its name from the Abbey of Saint-Vivant de Vergy, which owned the vineyard from the 11th century until the French Revolution.

In the Glass

Romanée-Saint-Vivant is Vosne-Romanée at its most ethereal: pure red cherry, rose petal, and violet dominate, carried on a weightless frame of fine-grained tannin and mineral saline tension. It is less powerful than La Tâche or Richebourg but more perfumed and transparent — a wine that rewards patience, typically needing 8–15 years before its aromatic complexity fully unfolds. The DRC version adds truffle, spice, and extraordinary length.
