Brunate Barolo MGA

La Morra · Barolo · Piedmont · Italy · Wine Auction Prices

Brunate is one of Barolo's largest and most historically significant MGAs, 13.5 hectares of south-to-southeast-facing slope straddling the communal border between La Morra and the Barolo commune at 280–350 metres elevation. The name derives from the Piedmontese dialect for 'brown' (brun), referencing the distinctive brownish hue of the Tortonian clay soils. The vineyard's scale means it is farmed by multiple prestigious producers, creating a rich basis for producer comparisons at auction: Giuseppe Rinaldi, Roberto Voerzio, Ceretto, Marcarini, Borgogno, and Cogno all bottle Brunate separately. Rinaldi's blend of Brunate and Le Coste is one of the most celebrated traditional-school Barolos; Ceretto's modern-leaning expression is among the commune's most widely distributed. The dual-commune position gives Brunate a stylistic flexibility that bridges La Morra's floral accessibility with the Barolo commune's more savoury, spice-driven character.

Brunate Barolo MGA
01

Brunate's cross-communal position (13.5 ha spanning both La Morra and the Barolo commune) means that different parcels within the same named MGA can produce wines of subtly different character depending on where in the vineyard the fruit originates.

02

Giuseppe Rinaldi's Brunate-Le Coste blend is considered the finest traditional Barolo in the La Morra-Barolo commune axis: vinified with extended maceration and aged in large cask, it is one of the most consistently awarded and sought Italian wines at auction.

03

Ceretto's modern-leaning Brunate — sourced from their 3-hectare Rocche dei Manzoni holding and influenced by shorter maceration and smaller oak — represents the contemporary stylistic interpretation, providing a compelling direct comparison to Rinaldi's traditionalism.

04

Marcarini, the Barolo commune's historic domaine estate, has farmed Brunate since the 1950s and produces one of the most reliable expressions of the MGA at prices substantially below the prestige producers — a significant value opportunity for collectors at auction.

Brunate Barolo is the most versatile MGA in the La Morra-Barolo commune area: Tortonian soils deliver the floral, perfumed character of great La Morra — dried rose, violet, and red cherry — while the high-altitude position and the Barolo commune influence add a savoury, mineral backbone not found in lower-slope La Morra sites. The finest examples from Rinaldi and Voerzio develop extraordinary complexity over 20–30 years; Ceretto and Marcarini are more accessible within a decade while retaining genuine depth.
