La Serra Barolo MGA

La Morra · Barolo · Piedmont · Italy · Wine Auction Prices

La Serra is a compact but highly regarded MGA of approximately 4 hectares in the La Morra commune, sitting at 300–380 metres elevation on a south-facing spur of Tortonian clay and tufa. The vineyard occupies one of La Morra's higher-altitude positions, which tempers the Tortonian warmth and adds natural acidity and freshness to the wines — making La Serra one of the commune's most structured and ageworthy crus despite its relatively modest size. Roberto Voerzio's parcel produces one of the finest single-vineyard expressions of La Morra's upper-altitude potential; Marcarini and Gianni Voerzio (Roberto's brother) also farm holdings here. La Serra Barolo is less well-known internationally than Cerequio or Brunate, but collectors familiar with the commune's hierarchy prize it for its combination of La Morra fragrance with genuine structural backbone.

La Serra Barolo MGA
01

La Serra's elevated position (300–380 m) within La Morra gives it naturally higher acidity and firmer tannins than lower-altitude La Morra sites like Cerequio, producing wines that combine the commune's characteristic floral perfume with greater structural backbone and longevity.

02

Roberto Voerzio's La Serra Barolo, produced with his signature extreme low-yield philosophy, represents one of the finest expressions of the MGA — concentrated, precise, and capable of extraordinary complexity with 15–20 years of age.

03

The compactness of the MGA (approximately 4 ha farmed by three main producers) creates a scarcity that supports prices disproportionate to La Serra's international name recognition, with Voerzio's allocation particularly difficult to acquire.

04

La Serra offers collectors a quality entry point to La Morra's Tortonian style at prices frequently below the more famous Cerequio and Brunate MGAs while offering comparable depth and longevity from the highest-altitude producers.

In the Glass

La Serra Barolo has the classic La Morra aromatic profile — dried rose, violet, and red cherry — but with a more structured, firmer tannic framework than lower-altitude sites, reflecting the MGA's higher elevation and more compact soil composition. The palate combines floral lift with genuine mineral backbone, and the finish shows more iron and savoury persistence than most La Morra crus. Voerzio's concentration adds an extra dimension of density that can approach Serralunga intensity in the best vintages.
