Cerequio Barolo MGA

La Morra · Barolo · Piedmont · Italy · Wine Auction Prices

Cerequio is one of the most prestigious MGAs in La Morra, 7.8 hectares of south-facing Tortonian clay and tufa on the commune's best-exposed hillside at 280–360 metres elevation. The site's combination of Tortonian soils — more fertile and softer-tannin than Helvetian limestone — and outstanding solar exposure produces Barolo of extraordinary aromatic intensity and relative approachability, without sacrificing the depth and longevity that defines the finest MGAs. Roberto Voerzio, who holds 1.9 of the vineyard's hectares and has farmed them with extreme low-yield discipline since the late 1980s, has turned Cerequio into one of the most recognised and sought single-vineyard Barolos at auction. Michele Chiarlo and Cogno farm the remainder, with Chiarlo's Cerequio one of the commune's most widely distributed estate wines. Voerzio's concentration and Chiarlo's accessibility define Cerequio's twin poles: the MGA is capable of both immediate pleasure and extraordinary long-term complexity.

Cerequio Barolo MGA
01

Roberto Voerzio's 1.9-hectare Cerequio holding is farmed with some of the most extreme low-yield discipline in the Barolo DOCG — as little as 1 kg per vine — producing wines of exceptional concentration from soils better known for perfume than power.

02

Cerequio's south-facing slope and 280–360 metre elevation give it the most consistent ripening conditions in La Morra, reducing vintage variation and ensuring a reliable supply of ripe, complex Nebbiolo even in cooler years.

03

The MGA is shared between three established producers (Voerzio, Chiarlo, Cogno) whose different philosophies — Voerzio's modern concentration, Chiarlo's commercial accessibility, Cogno's traditional structure — provide an exceptional basis for horizontal comparisons at auction.

04

Cerequio's Tortonian soils produce more immediately expressive tannins than the Helvetian communes, making it a preferred choice for collectors seeking Barolo that can be enjoyed within 10–12 years while still rewarding extended cellaring of 25 years or more.

In the Glass

Cerequio Barolo is the most complete expression of La Morra's Tortonian potential: intense dried rose, violet, and cherry aromatics on the nose, with a palate that combines concentration and refinement. Voerzio's version adds extraordinary density and grip; Chiarlo's is more perfumed and giving; Cogno's occupies a traditional middle ground. With age, Cerequio develops a complex interplay of dried flowers, leather, tobacco, and mineral depth — the quintessence of a great La Morra cru.
