About Crozes-Hermitage
Crozes-Hermitage is the largest northern Rhône appellation, with 1,238 hectares, about half of the region's vineyard. Its wines are rated below those of neighbouring Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie. It surrounds Tain-l'Hermitage, from granite slopes near Gervans in the north to flatter clay and stony ground in the south. Most of the wine is red Syrah, which may include up to 15% Marsanne or Roussanne, though pure Syrah is increasingly common. Whites are made from those two grapes. Tasters praised its likeness to Hermitage as early as 1846. The AOC was defined in 1937 and enlarged in 1952. Jaboulet is among the big producers.
