About Gigondas
Gigondas is a southern Rhône appellation made only within the commune of Gigondas in the Vaucluse. Its wine is mostly red and mainly Grenache, with a little rosé, and white has been allowed since 2022. Seen as a younger sibling of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, it can age well. The name is traced to Latin and a Roman recreation site for soldiers. Despite an 1894 Paris gold medal, until the Second World War much of it went to bolster thin Burgundies. After the frost of 1956 killed olive trees, vines took their place. Gigondas became its own AOC in 1971. The Dentelles de Montmirail split it into cooler and warmer zones.
