About Joseph Phelps
Joe Phelps was a construction businessman and amateur winemaker when he established Joseph Phelps Vineyards in Napa Valley in 1973, at a time when the valley was still sparsely developed. From the 1974 vintage he began assembling a single proprietary blend each year from the best lots of the harvest. That wine, Insignia, became the estate's flagship and an early model for the California Bordeaux-style blend. Phelps also built a name with Cabernet Sauvignon and Rhône-style wines, and the company gradually bought vineyards across Napa and later on the western Sonoma Coast. It now farms about 525 acres and belongs to Moët Hennessy, part of LVMH.
